Who Is CAPF?

In early 1985 a group of California Firefighters in Santa Clara County became excited about the possibility of beginning their own self-funded Long Term Disability Plan that would turn out to be the finest LTD Plan in the state and most probably the entire nation. The founding organization realized that premiums being charged by large insurance companies far exceeded those that were needed to sustain a great plan with reasonable contributions. No longer would the insurance companies hold California Firefighters hostage to ever increasing premiums. Only those funds needed to provide great benefits and safety would be required. Profits were never a motive of the Plan.
Enrollment began throughout Northern California and by August 1985 there were sufficient firefighters enrolled to begin the California Association of Professional Firefighters (CAPF). At the first meeting of CAPF, Phil Kleinheinz of Santa Clara Firefighters was elected the Charter President. At the first official meeting of the new Plan, Bob Makjavich, Palo Alto Firefighers-Local 1319 was elected Treasurer and Dave Caleri, Santa Clara Co. Firefighters-Local 1165 was elected Secretary.
Within months, the growth of the Plan far exceeded expectations. Within just a few short years, CAPF was, and still is the leading provider of LTD coverage for its many members.
Now in its 25th year, more firefighters and their families depend on the excellent service and benefits provided by the Plan. Nearly $50 million dollars has been paid in claims. CAPF has rewritten the book on LTD for firefighters.
